Last week, EPA announced a suite of new rules that will curb pollution from fossil fuel power plants. Two of these new safeguards—the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) and the Carbon Rule—have been a focus of Moms’ advocacy for over 10 years.
- The Carbon Rule and MATS tackle power plant pollution from different sides. While the Carbon Rule slashes climate-warming emissions from fossil fuel power plants, MATS cuts down on mercury and other toxic pollutants.
- Mercury poses a major threat to our children’s developing brains. That’s why our organizer in Montana, Michelle Uberuaga (pictured), praises the strengthened MATS in interviews with NBC Montana and the Montana Free Press.
- “I recognize I can’t control the air my son breathes, and I really rely on EPA to do their job,” National Field Director Patrice Tomcik tells the Washington Post in a conversation about the importance of these new pollution protections.
